ARTIST'S STATEMENT: ILLUMINATIONS

These collages belong to an ongoing series of work called Illuminations, borrowing from the medieval concept of illuminated manuscripts because of their spiritual quality and glowing inner light. These works are living, breathing, spiritual worlds where something of immense beauty and power is hidden just out of view.

Collage is the act of bringing disparate parts together to
create a whole. It is an act of organization, inspiration, and meditation.

The first phase of creation is the search for papers. Taking magazines, pieces are chosen and cut for their color and texture, avoiding all reference to objects.

During the discovery phase pieces of colored paper are combined to create color vibration. Paper scraps are moved around until they seem to fit, like pieces in a puzzle. Disparate parts are brought together to create a unified whole. With the right combinations, the works are "illumined" and take on a life of their own.
